Volunteers' Week 2025: Celebrating Rene – The Heart of Hackney Dudes

As we mark Volunteers' Week, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our most cherished volunteers – Rene. At 97 years young, Rene is not just a volunteer; she is the beating heart of Hackney Dudes.

If you’ve ever visited our Friday Dudes drop-ins at Dalston Curve Garden, you’ve likely seen Rene – often surrounded by smiles, laughter, and mugs of tea. Her presence is magnetic. The Dudes speak of her with deep respect and affection, and it’s clear the feeling is mutual. Rene treats every man in the group like family – ensuring everyone is looked after, heard, and, most importantly, well-fed.

Rene doesn’t arrive empty-handed. Her iconic shopping trolley, filled with cupboard essentials and thoughtful treats, is a staple of every session. Within minutes, its contents are shared – not just snacks, but a reminder that someone is thinking of you. Her care is quiet but unwavering, and the impact she has on the men who attend – many of whom face challenges with isolation or mental health – cannot be overstated.

As someone who has witnessed Rene in action many times, I can say it’s truly inspiring. She offers so much more than refreshments – she brings dignity, joy, and connection to the space. Watch Rene share her story in this short video below.

A Word from Vicky Harrison, Hackney Dudes Project Lead:

Rene has been the pioneer Hackney Dudes volunteer since 2019, she is a much-loved member of the men’s group. We held a party for Rene’s 97th birthday last week, which she celebrated with a fundraising skydive for St Joseph’s Hospice.

Rene is fearless, raising funds for charity with a Wing Walk flight, Abseiling from Broadgate Tower, a Zip Wire ride, and numerous Skydives. The Dudes find her to be truly inspirational, with an ever positive attitude, and an endless capacity for fun. Rene is a huge contributor to the success of the project and we are incredibly grateful to have her support and to know this wonderful woman.

Volunteers like Rene remind us that it’s often the smallest acts of kindness that leave the deepest mark. Her contribution to the Hackney Dudes – and to MRS Independent Living more widely – is immeasurable. From all of us: thank you, Rene. We see you, we appreciate you, and we are so lucky to have you.
