Hoarding training & capacity-building
We help teams build internal capacity so they can more effectively and appropriately support people who hoard.
Our training is very interactive, practice-based and responsive to who’s in the room. Hoarding is a systemwide issue and where possible, we encourage training to include participants from across the local health, care and housing system.
Sessions are delivered by a frontline senior decluttering practitioner with direct experience of supporting people to manage and reduce clutter and achieve long-lasting behaviour change.
Our training and capacity-building offer has three different elements which are intended to build professionals’ expertise and confidence in supporting people with hoarding behaviour.
A one-day workshop aimed at frontline workers.
Action learning sets for small groups of professionals which can be delivered in-person or virtually.
Coaching and consultancy for key staff members to help develop local specialism in hoarding support.
We can deliver each of the above elements separately or in combination, depending on what best suits your needs and budget.
One-day workshop
We explore practice and share experiences and ideas with the aim of learning through dialogue. Looking briefly at legislation, safeguarding and risk around hoarding, we will consider in depth what it means to use deficit models of practice, and explore asset-based models taking a trauma-informed, therapeutic approach.
Action learning sets
Action learning sets provide a safe space for professionals to discuss the challenges they face with individual hoarding cases. Participants will support each other to gain a deeper understanding of issues and develop a set of actions to move things forward.
Coaching & consultancy
A Making Room practitioner will accompany local staff on visits and offer support, guidance and coaching to help resolve ‘sticky’ issues. They will debrief with staff to identify strategies and learning points.
