Hoarding training & capacity-building
We help teams build internal capacity so they can support people who hoard more effectively.
Our training is very interactive, practice-based and responsive to who’s in the room; attendees might be from social care teams, mental health or housing services, or indeed any part of the system that interacts with hoarding issues.
We can create a bespoke training package for your service, or team members can attend as individuals. Please get in touch for a conversation about what you’re looking for and how we can support you.
Our training and capacity-building offer has three different elements which are intended to build professionals’ expertise and confidence in supporting people with hoarding behaviour.
One-day workshops aimed at frontline workers. These can be provided on-site for whole teams, or booked directly by individuals.
Action learning sets for small groups of professionals that can be delivered in-person or virtually.
Coaching and consultancy for key staff members to help develop local specialism in hoarding support.
We can deliver each of the above elements separately or in combination, depending on what best suits your needs and budget.
One-day workshop
Our workshops offer opportunities for professionals to explore and think about various perspectives on hoarding and how it is understood in different contexts.
Participants will be expected to take part in discussions, consider new ideas, draw on critical thinking skills and reflect on their work.
To find out about our training opportunities for individuals that are currently available to book, please visit our profile page on EventBrite.
Action learning sets
Action learning sets provide a safe space for professionals to discuss the challenges they face with individual hoarding cases. Participants will support each other to gain a deeper understanding of issues and develop a set of actions to move things forward.
Coaching & consultancy
A Making Room practitioner will accompany local staff on visits and offer support, guidance and coaching to help resolve ‘sticky’ issues. They will debrief with staff to identify strategies and learning points.
Workshops for Professionals
Our workshops offer participants the opportunity to talk about their practice in light of different views and approaches outlined by current research and thinking.
Our objective is for you to leave the workshop having explored your own ideas and understanding, and to have taken on some new ones that you can integrate into your practice.
We will help you:
increase your awareness of people who hoard and the associated risks and hazards;
appreciate the wider context of working with and in partnership with other services to meet the needs of those living in hoarded properties.
We appreciate how challenging it can be for professionals to find the time for learning and development. In our training, we use our experience and expertise to enable people to understand and be able to tailor approaches to each person, being led by their needs and standards of living.
Sessions are delivered by our Senior Decluttering Practitioner who has extensive frontline experience of supporting people to reduce and manage clutter and achieve long-lasting behaviour change.
